I notice that there is a Firefox 18. My version of Firefox is 17, and states that it is the latest version (Mac OS X). Why?

Firefox 18 is still in Beta, it hasn't been released for general usage yet. It will be released next week (Jan 8th is the current plan), and you will then be able to update from Firefox 17.0.1 to 18. Or you can download the Beta now if you are willing to risk a bit more instability. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/beta/
