What kind of archive is that (ZIP, RAR) or something else?

If it isn't a text file and the sever sends it as text/plain then Firefox will open it by default as text in a Firefox tab.

Can you attach a screenshot or a link to such a file?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.
