I have a tower computer with windows o.s. using Firefox browser it started to run slow , download approx 3Mbps , whilst on same machine using I.E. the speed is approx 6 Mbps which is about what I used to get with Firefox. Strangely enough I have another machine a net book with Linux o.s. and Firefox browser and that still gets a good speed of approx 6Mbps , which seems to point to the windows version of Firefox being the problem . I have twice tried reinstalling Firefox but there is no improvement , recently there have been a couple of updates for Firefox and would like to know is it possible to go back to an older version to see if that cures the problem.

I was as sure as I could be that the problem was with the combination of f- secure , windows vista and Firefox . The O.S. I can't change , Firefox I don't want to change so f-secure drew the short straw . Luckily I did not have a long contract with f-secure so I just uninstalled it and moved on , replacement works fine , life's too short .

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works.

Thanks , yes I managed to start it in the safe mode and it was much faster , over 6.5Mbps on two different speed checkers , I could tell it was more responsive even before the speed results. Problem is I don't understand what this is telling me , technicalwise I am in over my head . Is it something relating to my security ?

Sorry to bother you again but I have just been on the f-secure help forum and it appears that this "mismatch ", for want of a better word , between f-secure and Firefox is an ongoing problem . I trawled through the posts going back 12 months starting with FF 6.0.2 . Some on there claimed that turning off browsing protection solved the problem so I tried that but it made no difference to mine.

I think I am right to assume that when started in safe mode the f-secure is turned completely off ( as no icon appeared ) which proves to my untutored mind that the security is the cause.
One more bit of information that may help is that a friend uses the same service provider has the same f-secure and uses Firefox browser but does not have this speed problem , the only difference is that his machine is older than mine and uses XP whilst mine uses vista

DOES ANYONE EVER READ THIS STUFF OR GIVE ANSWERS THAT ACTUALLY SOLVE ANY OF THE PROBLEMS !!!!!!!!!!

If the problem is caused by F-Secure or related to that software then you need to contact them to ask for advice or see if you can identify the setting(s) or possible extensions for Firefox.

Did you check for problems with F-Secure Browser Protection?
