text fades and blurs while scrolling, since last FF update

Hello, The last recent update gave me 13.0.1. I'm on Win7, 64-bit, fully updated. Since the update, when I scroll a page, the text fades and blurs. It's incredibly annoying!

Is there anything I can do to stop this behavior?

Please let me know if you need any further info about my system.

Edit (few minutes later) I have more info already. It does not happen as badly when using the scrollbars. It only happens slightly with the scrollbars. It's only happening seriously when I use my mouse's scroll feature. My mouse is a Cirque Smart Cat Pro, which is an external, touchpad mouse. (It's functioning perfectly, and still fairly new.)

In my experience, this touchpad mouse (which I LOVE) does not behave exactly like a traditional mouse does. The difference I've noticed is with zooming, and only in certain programs. I don't notice this difference with Firefox. But just to let you know that there are some differences from the traditional mouse, as far as performance.

I'll post more info as I learn it :-)

Thanks for your help

Chosen solution

hello brynn2, this problem is probably related to the smooth scrolling feature, that was enabled by default in firefox 13. you could try switching it off again in firefox > options > advanced > general.

however before you do that you could also check if an updated driver for your graphics hardware either from here or on the support section of your notebooks manufacturer does resolve the problem (since the one you currently have is marked as outdated and does contain some issues)...

Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

Hi madperson, You posted while I was editing my original message. I'll check the settings you mentioned. The mouse is still fairly new, and I doubt if there is a newer driver. But I'll check it too.

Oh wait.... You said "...the one you have currently..." Do you mean that the Troubleshooting Info that I provided contains something about the mouse?

Ok, I'll check the driver first.

Thanks and I'll let you know what happens :-)

Edit Oops, you said graphics driver?? Not sure how mouse action relates to graphics driver....??

Problems with scrolling can be caused by a graphics display driver that isn't fully compatible with the current Firefox version.

Thanks cor-el and madperson.

I've already looked into updating the graphics driver. And I realize that I've looked into this in the past, and probably more than once. The last thing it says before I click the button to download it, is "use at your own risk". Since I don't know what the risks are, I feel like I should avoid it until I do understand the risks. So I did not download the upgraded driver.

But, I did find the smooth scrolling option and disabled it. Now the text stays legible while I scroll.

I'm not sure it matters anymore, but the problem happens with the scrollbars as well. It seems I have a higher accelleration on my mouse, than the scrollbars have. If I move the scrollbars really, really fast, I see the same problem. So that at least explains that part of it.

I'm still relatively a new FF user, and I understand that I have to mark the specific message which solves the problem. Since 2 options were offered, I thought I would say that I will mark the first reply (from madperson) but it's turning off the smooth scrolling option that solved it for me. Note that I did not try upgrading the driver, for reasons I've already mentioned. So that might have worked too.

I'm also not sure if this matters anymore either, but I don't understand what "smooth scrolling" is supposed to do. I guess now that I think about it, when I scroll, it is sort of "jumpy". Well, maybe someday I will learn what the risks are when upgrading the graphics driver, so that I can upgrade it.

Anyway, thanks for your help. I really appreciate it :-D

You can try to increase the value of the general.smoothScroll.mouseWheel.durationMaxMS pref on the about:config page a higher value like 1000 to see if that makes a difference with smooth scrolling enabled.
