I want to import bookmarks (.json) from my old computer BUT i do NOT want to overwrite the existing bookmarks on my new computer. How can I do this? Other solutions simply restore (i.e., overwrite)...

All good ideas!! However, here's another twist. There are actually TWO old computers--my old personal laptop and my old work computer--different sets of bookmarks. And no, I don't have access to either computer anymore.

However, it sounds like I can do two iterations of AliceW's suggestion--i.e., Export my current bookmarks, restore first old computer bookmarks, export restored bookmarks, restore second old computer bookmarks, then reimport both created sets to merge into a new super bookmarks. Is that correct?

I think I'll go take a walk in the park first to clear my head... then I'll come back and try it. It sounds quite easy in principle.

JSON backups will replace your existing bookmarks. You can add to your existing bookmarks by importing a bookmarks.HTML file. Ref: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox

Do you still have access to Firefox on the old computer? If so, open Firefox on the old computer and then export your bookmarks to an HTML file. Transfer the bookmarksHTML file to the new computer and then import it into Firefox. See Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks and Importing bookmarks from an HTML file for details.

You can also use a separate profile and restore the JSON backup in that profile and either save the bookmarks to an HTML file or have both profiles open at the same time by starting the other with the -no-remote switch and use Copy and Paste in the bookmarks manager like I would do.

Good idea, cor-el ... Actually, you can do everything with a single profile:

  1. Export your Firefox bookmarks on the Win7 computer to an HTML file
  2. Restore the JSON backup from the old computer onto the Win7 computer, which will overwrite the existing bookmarks that are now saved in a bookmarks.HTML file.
  3. Import the bookmarks,HTML file to merge the two sets of bookmarks.
