I want my bookmarks file (places.sqlite) to reside on a network drive. How do I configure Firefox to do this?

You can't move just the places.sqlite file, you have to move the entire Profile folder.

Moving the profile folder to a network drive may however lead to performance issues as all cache data may need to be send to that drive.

Thanks guys. That being said, how do I configure Firefox to open at the new profile location? The profiles in question, would be existing user profiles, not new ones.

You can use the profile manager to create a new profile and choose the location of that new profile to point to the profile folder on that network drive.
Firefox will recognize that profile and use it.
If you do need to create a new profile then make sure to point to a new empty folder and NOT a folder that already has other files in it.
