Currently have Firefox 3.6 installed, Win XP SP2. Also use IE7. I want to have both browsers on my system. They offer different advantages. There are many sites that will not operate on one or the other. I just started downloading the FireFox 9.0.1 version. Up popped a message that all my Java files are incompatible with the new Firefox ; it wants to disable them until some future date when (and if) they are made compatible with Firefox! I presume this means I cannot install Firefox 9. If it disables all my Java files for FireFox, will it disable it for Internet Explorer 7, too? Most current program installed is the Java 6 update 23 environment.

Also, the Firefox download is a big file. (The current version takes up only 21.29 mb) The set up executable is 14 mb! I use dial-up connection. The new features are dubious anyway. I won't use and will seek to disable many of the new features in v. 9 anyways.

So, should I not install version 9? Will it disable my IE 7 browser?

That message is not about the Java plugin that runs the applets, but about Java Console extensions that are no longer supported.

The Java plugin that you see in "Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" is used to run Java applets.
You only need the Java Console extension (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) if you want to check and debug Java applets.
Your above posted system details show multiple Java Console extensions.
You can uninstall and remove Java Console extensions, you do not need them to run Java applets.

You can also disable the Java Quick Starter extension if you have it.

  • Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions
  • Control Panel -> Java -> Advanced tab -> Miscellaneous -> Java Quick Starter (disable)
