I can access the Option window and all other settings, but when I click on Privacy, the previous screen remains visible. Only the Privacy button is highlighted, that is all.

I run Firefox 8.0.1 on a Toshiba laptop, under XP Professional

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Thanks Swarnava, Tried a few other things in the meantime and got it solved: I simply got rid of the Google homepage, which solved all problems. I am reluctant to try another update, it is getting crazy lately with all updates, each and everyone of them introduces new problems. So, I stick to XP and all other old fashioned software as long as possible. Seems that all new things are becoming worse with every so-called improvement.

Thanks Cor-el! I already had my incompatible extensions disabled, so that could not be the problem. It clearly has something to do with the Google homepage, because when I got rid of it, all works better and faster and my Tools menu is fully accessible again. Not a good sign with the renewed agreement between Firefox and Google ....... By the way, getting rid of the Google homepage with all the "smart" attachments, made everything faster!
