I had some trouble getting flash games embedded in google plus to play and your updates site gives me a red critical update link to flash 11, however, the link goes to a flash 10 plug-in page, which I already have installed. my system is vista.

By "red critical update link", do you mean on the Plugin Check page?:

The link there takes me to the correct page to download Flash, which is:

There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash:

  • an ActiveX version for IE only
  • a Plugin version for most other browsers including Firefox
  • On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.

Check your Plugins often --> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

  • only the most popular/used Plugins are known by this page
  • page will detect only installed, enabled Plugins

Install or update Adobe Flash

  1. Using Firefox, go to the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later. Un-check any items on that page that you do not want to download (i.e., "McAfee Security Scan Plus":
  2. When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit OR Firefox button > Exit)
  3. Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
    • In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
    • The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    • The installation is quick.
  4. Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
  5. To update/install the ActiveX version for IE only, repeat the process, but use IE to go to the above website.

Not related to your question, but...

You may need to update some other plug-ins. Check your plug-ins and update as necessary:

Flash Player 11 requires a Firefox 4+ version and you are running Firefox 3.6.x

A little experimentation:

  • The Mozilla Check Plugins page apparently does NOT detect your Firefox version and, therefore, can not distinguish which version of Adobe Flash you actually need. That page apparently simply compares your version of Adobe Flash to the most current version available, compares the result and notifies you whether or not you should update; sometimes incorrectly based on your Firefox version as in the original poster's case.
  • The Adobe Flash download page does detect your Firefox version and recommends the correct version. If, however, you click on the "Do you have a different operating system or browser" link on that page, then on the resulting page click your OS (not "Other"), then the page does not detect your Firefox version and offers only the most current Adobe Flash version for both IE and all other browers as your choices..
  • Conclusion: Both pages lack some information/control over what should be recommended. The Mozilla Plugin Check page has never been "completed" and not all major third-party plugin developers provide the full information needed to determine the version of the plugin that you have installed nor do they all provide to Mozilla the information concerning their latest version(s) --- that has been known for some time. Use the Mozilla Plugin Check page as a guide, but keep in mind that you may need to do some research on your own.

On my system, I have Firefox version 3.6.25, 9.0.1 and 10beta all installed with separate profiles. You can have only one version of Adobe Flash. Adobe Flash 11.1.102.55 will work with Firefox 3.6.25 contrary to Adobe's tech specs page. However, I do not spend a great deal of time watching .flv videos and there may be some glitches in using Flash 11 with Firefox 3.6.x versions, but it appears to work for "basic" online video watching.

Just my findings for anyone interested.
