Display expands to cover toolbars and taskbar

When first opened there is a brief flash of the correct homepage. The vertical resolution then immediately expands to hide the toolbars at the top, and the taskbar at the bottom. I cannot access bookmarks, or carry out many other functions. I also appear to have 'lost' my email contacts list.

Sounds like you are in the Full Screen mode, hit F11 to toggle it off.

Yep! This works. Many thanks folk (p.s. you can also do it by right clicking on the toolbar, then choosing exit full screen mode - hint from another contact!)
