Before I only had to type "IMDb" and hit enter and it used to take me to the site straight away, but now all these suggested links come up first. What can I do to make it like it was before? And my Norton password safe doesn't appear in firefox.

Before I only had to type "IMDb" and hit enter and it used to take me to the site straight away, but now all these suggested links come up first.

Or I used to type "youtube" and after hitting enter, I was taken straight to youtube's homepage.

What can I do to make it like it was before so it takes me straight to the site? Secondly, my Norton passwords and usernames for all sites that was stored in my "Norton safe" doesn't appear in the browser. Will this be available soon?

Chosen solution

Try setting your about:config entries to:

  • keyword.enabled - > true
  • browser.fixup.alternate.enabled -> true
  • browser.fixup.alternate.prefix -> www.
  • browser.fixup.alternate.suffix -> .com

and then restart your browser and try imdb supernatural again.

You should use "imdb supernatural" rather than "supernatural imdb" because you want the domain before the page for the lookup to work best.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I don't mean to sound like a pest, but I don't want to save the keywords in bookmarks. In the previous version I didn't have to save any keywords.

If I was going to a site for the first time, I just type the name of that site in the URL bar and hit enter which would take me to that site (without saving it as a keyword first). Do you know what I mean?

If this can't be done anymore with this version, then I'd understand. It's important to remember I didn't save any keywords in my bookmarks for the previous version of Firefox, so can I not have that same feature with this version without saving keywords?

PS: The information was helpful, but not exactly what I was hoping for. I hope you can help.

The functionality in Firefox has changed some. Sometimes people type in a keyword and make a typo, and can then be directed to an unwanted page. The new functionality helps to keep that from happening, and it helps with security.

You might find the information at:

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Location%20bar%20search

to be helpful to you, as it shows you how to disable the default keyword search behavior that gives the results you describe.

Please report back on your progress.

Sir, you are a genius! But I'm only half way there. If I type "youtube" in the URL address bar, it takes me to the homepage like it used to before, but I just need help with one more thing and I'm good to go.

If I type "Supernatural imdb" in the URL and hit enter, it took me to "Supernatural" series page on IMDb website, but now if I type "Supernatural imdb" and hit enter, it says "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded."

You've figured out the hard part, this can't be that hard, can it? What ever your suggestion, I'll work on it tomorrow. Thank you!

I'm just a user like you, and a ma'am, but that's okay <grin>.

There is always a balance to be struck between convenience and security, so sometimes things that are convenient must evolve to balance with security concerns.

I'm glad you are making progress. Please report back on how you're doing, and if this has solved your issue, mark it "solved". Good luck.

Ma'am (:)), it hasn't fully been solved yet, but I'm almost there. I know you're another user, but you're more knowledgeable than me. If we can solve the last part, we'll be done.

Using the same URL bar, when I type "youtube" it takes me straight to the homepage like it used to before (or other website names). But using the same URL bar and typing "Supernatural imdb," that used to take me to the Supernatural series page on IMDb, but now it says "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded." Or if I typed "Tiger Woods wiki," that would take me to the Wikipedia site displaying Tiger Woods information, but now that says the same thing ("The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.").

If you can help complete this search problem, then I'd really appreciate it, and all my current issues with the new version will be solved. Thank you.

Mademoiselle, I could give you a sloppy one right across the cheek right now :)

I knew you could do it, so I persisted. My problem is solved and all is well. I could sacrifice other features, but this search was imperative for me.

(As Elvis) Thank you, thank you, thank you very much. I don't know how else to thank you, because this really meant a lot to me. Much appreciated and I am indebted to you.

Best regards :)
