cookies not updating

I have a problem with cookies at our website forum which is phpBB template. When I log on with my account I see all new threads highlighted. When I read a thread it is not highlighted anymore. The problem is that when i use the forum about 2 or 3 months, the threads status are not refreshed anymore. They are always highlighted no matter they are read or not. When I clear cookies everything is ok but this is tedious. This happens constantly.
