I experienced this problem after installing a vpn program called hotspot shield. I was using firefox 7.0.1, I have also tried previous versions but even if i uninstall firefox and delete all my user data, firefox still crashes after I use mozbackup (mozbackup hasn't been updated for months)

You can know this by looking up the crashreport:
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-a2061e06-079b-4078-9815-54fc12111104
It is showing RapportTanzan36.DLL in stackframes #7,8 and 9. This dll is part of Trusteer Rapport.

It worked, but how did you know? Thanks very much, I was just about to do a fresh install of win 7! Thanks again

"It worked, but how did you know?"

I am guessing because of your crash ID report : https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/a2061e06-079b-4078-9815-54fc12111104

It may have been an empty signature one, but note the crashing thread info in that mentioning

7 RapportTanzan36.DLL RapportTanzan36.DLL@0x3e73
8 RapportTanzan36.DLL RapportTanzan36.DLL@0x8c90
9 RapportTanzan36.DLL RapportTanzan36.DLL@0xbede

Suggesting Trusteer Rapport is involved.
