a program i use requires smtp.. all attempts to set this up have failed. I am not a computer expert so require reasonably detailed instructions

Sorry, that isn't a Firefox support issue. SMTP is an email protocol and Firefox doesn't do email. Have you tried getting support from the developer or distributor of that program?
