firefox 6 wont download. 4 is still operating.

On Mac 10.5.8 I have thought I downloaded firefox 6.whatever several times. Each time when I go to the icon on my dock, it is still version 4.0. I have dragged the downloaded icon into Applications and attempted to drag icon to the dock. Each time the Applications still lists an older version of Firefox. How to make the downloaded version 6 actually appear in Applications?
