firefox opens to google page but cannot connect. I already tried downloading new firefox...worked for 3 days then nothing again

My computer will open internet explorer but not firefox, a browser I have used almost exclusively on this machine for several years. I ran my Macafee, disposed of some undesireable cookies and still nothing from Firefox. I deleted the firefox and reinstalled the latest edition of Firefox, keeping my old settings and bookmarks. It worked great for a week and then the same problem has reawakened. When I click the Firefox icon, my Google search page opens, but will not connect and I get this message:

"Unable to connect to the server at www.google.com"

Same message appears no matter what I try to connect. Internet Explorer works fine

Installed this version on August 7th and it stipped working yesterday. Last websites I visited were county offices, searching for records, if that helps

Thank you so much. I check my Macafee browser protection and sure enough, Firefox was blocked. Weird, because it worked for several days. Could I somehow be inadvertently blocking it?

I do not know about McAfee, but some firewalls will block an application after it is updated.
