A box pops up to ask if I want passwords to be remembered, but doesn't move, close or anything except irritate; why?

A box pops up top left, with a key symbol, saying "Remember password" when I have submitted a password. There is a drop-down box, with and arrow which doesn't provide any options, and clicking on the x to right accesses whatever is under the x, as if the box wasn't there.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
