Somebody has sent out mail from my mailbox. How can I report this and have it stopped

I thought my password was secure. Somebody managed to hack into my google mailbox and send out doubtful material. I tried to report this and could not. I changed my password and it has not happened again but some of my friends are now unable to send emails to this address. They are returned. Can anybody advise me on an action to take to rectify this situation

You account may not have been hacked. Spammers will frequently use email spoofing so that the sender address and other parts of the email header are altered so they appear to come from a different source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_spoofing

If you still believe your account has been compromised, report it here - http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=50270
