I originally imported my favorites over to mozilla firefox from internet explorer. I now have BOTH bookmarks and favorites on the toolbar. I only require one of them. Please can you advise me on how to remove one of them.

If you have the Favorites listed, it will have been added by an add-on such as PlainOldFavorites. You can uninstall the add-on and the Favorites menu will be removed - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons
