I am trying to install "Awesome Screenshot" but could not be installed because Firefox (ver 4.0) cannot modify the needed file, and this addon is featured on the Firefox home page.

I've got this problem on my work computer too (running Windows XP), but it's fine at home (running Windows 7).

I managed to get around it on Windows XP by installing it as if it was a development addon - ie. by copying the xpi file to another location, unzipping it then adding a file with the filename 'jid0-GXjLLfbCoAx0LcltEdFrEkQdQPI@jetpack', and the contents 'C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Firefox Extensions\AwesomescreenshotCaptureandAnnotate' in to the Firefox extensions folder (normally 'C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions').

Obviously this isn't an ideal fix but thought it might help someone.

This is Joel from the awesome screenshot dev team. Could you send us the path of your Firefox extension directory? We suspect the issue had to do with the character length of the local directory of an XP machine.

Thanks.

My extension directory is at: C:\Documents and Settings\xxxx.xxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\vt0f98lj.default\extensions

I've x'd out the username part, but kept it the same length as it actually is.

I'm pretty sure this extension used to work with Firefox 3.6 so I'm not sure what's changed though.

The issue was solved in Awesome screeenshot 2.3. Let me know whether you still experienced the problem.

Thanks.

Hi Joel, I have FF7beta and I tried to install your add-on v2.3.3 for the first time. I got the same error message as people in this thread. I have no problems with installing other add-ons, but it's true that all of them were needing a restart (unlike yours, as I understand). My profile name is also long: "xxxxxxnx.Xxxx Xxxx nnnn-nn", where x are letters, X are caps, n are numbers, - is - and spaces are spaces. Maybe the spaces are the problem? Hope this helps...

Update: I have tried to install the add-on to a profile with a shorter name and without spaces and it worked.
