When I try to delete Firefox to solve my earlier problem, it says to close Firefox before it can be deleted (but it's not open). Can it be running in the background?

Yes it can be running in the background. Open the Windows Task Manager > Process tab and look for firefox.exe and use End Process on it. Or reboot Windows, that should kill a "hung" process.
