the search function keeps defaulting to ask.com even after I remove it how can I stop this happening?

I am using 3.6.10 and recently each time I open the browser I find it has defaulted to using ask.com as the favourite search engine. As I don't want this I go into options and remove it completely. When I reopen the browser it has 'returned' How can I stop this happening?

Ask.com will change several preferences, for details of things that you need to reset to remove ask.com see this post at mozillaZine - http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=5069645#p5069645

You will see a few of those preferences relate to the search engine.
