Chosen solution

Go to Help > Troubleshooting Information, then click on Open Containing Folder. That will open Windows Explorer in your Firefox profile.

You can then see the file places.sqlite which you can backup with Firefox closed.

There are also automated backups under the bookmarkbackups directory.

Finally, you can export your bookmarks through the Firefox UI: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+and+restoring+bookmarks#Manual_backup
