After an update to 3.6.3, firefox couldn't open a file. After searching through the dialogues, I could not find the settings for helper applications.

Information that I found on the web via google seemed to be outdated: Various posts advise to go to 'tools > options'. I do not have an options submenu.

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

== Firefox couldn't open a torrent file.

I hope it keeps working ok. You can use this thread again if you need more support for this issue, since I have it on an email subscription and I won't miss it.

Hello Bob.

Tools > Options is for Windows. Linux interface is different. To access your options screen in Linux, I think it's Edit > Preferences...

@morbus

Upon entering the dialogues accessible under edit>preferences, I cannot find a way to add applications or actions for a target filetype.

However, the article that cor-el links to points to possible paths of actions. Unfortunately, I'm still stuck.

The article says that associations between filetypes and actions can be found under edit>preferences>applications. And indeed, I can easily find this list of actions.

Unfortunately, there is no obvious way of adding or editing new associations.

My list does not include ".torrent" files, so I can't change an actions, in a manner directed by the article.

The article says that when new filetypes are opened, the browser will ask the user how to treat the file. But this didn't happen for me. I was simply informed by the browser that an application that should be used to open the filetype did not exist (even though it does!)

So, unfortunately, I'm still stuck.

Can you tell us which file it was? Or it's extension, at least.

Hah...

Problem has magically dissapeared.

I scratch my head in mild confusion. But, at least things are working now.

Same problem with .torrent files here. This is the case on multiple sites, so it isn't a site problem. FF will not ask what to do, nor start the download. It just sits there and spins. And there is no way to manually add mime types to the applications list in preferences/options.

Sad part is, Transmission won't open any of the urls directly either, it will only open already downloaded torrent files. (which I can't download with FF) Very odd.
