Much more often than I like, I will find what seem like randomly selected 'foreign' characters replacing punctuation marks (I think) that should be there on web sites. The following text is an example-

"This download is provided “as is” and has no warranty. If you are not satisfied with "

I have wondered if it was a result of using a display font that didn't include whatever character was supposed to be there or if it was because I specified the wrong default encoding, but nothing I've specified in the Options makes any difference.

This happened

A few times a week

== Firefox 2.0 was first installed and every version since

Is the View > Character Encoding set to Unicode (UTF-8) if that happens?

Can you post a link to a website where you see it? It is possible that that content was copied from another source and is in the page code (View > Page Source).

Here's a page with an error on it. The URL is -

http://www.genealogical.com/index.php?main_page=products_state&p...

The text that shows as wrong characters is-

"Following John – Documenting the Identity and Path "

and the position of the error, in case it doesn't show to you is between the name John and the word Documenting (just to the left of the second quote mark).

Same page shows a second error-

Sloan and Related Families: Descendants of George Thomas Sloan (1756–1836) of County Cork, Ireland, and Spartanburg and Laurens Counties, South Carolina

The text that shows as foreign characters is inside the parentheses, just after the number 1756.

Attached is a screenshot of the text in question, in context.

That is a problem with the text on those web pages. It looks that they copied the text from an Unicode source to a Western encoded document and in such cases you see the characters that the Unicode characters consist of and not the actual character. Actually it looks that they copied the text twice, because switching to Unicode still shows such artifacts.

I get this on several web sites, and I'm sure it is not just from the creator's incorrect copy/pasting, becasue I can see the text fine with IE.

I get the problem on: http://twitter.com/ and http://www.planeteclipse.com/

This issue can be caused by the bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or another (bitmap) font that can't be displayed by Firefox in that font size. Firefox can't display that font in the specified size and displays gibberish instead. You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.

Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or find a True type version of that font that doesn't have the problem.

Try this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter): data:text/html,<font face="Helvetica" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font><br><font face="Helvetica Neue" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font>

Sorry, cor-el, but your html text code didn't work at all in FireFox. It simply failed to find it as a valid URL and passed it along to Google as a search.

While I'm quite sure that the problem involves either not having the right fonts registered or having the wrong encoding, I don't have the skill to track down the real source of the bad text.

Make sure that you paste the full text including the data:text/html

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data:_URI_scheme

Well, it DID work this time. On the other hand, it produced no visible error in the alphabets...

I had this exact problem; deleted several circa 1999 versions of Helvetica added from an old install of Adobe Type Manager (I think?) and voila', I'm good! So yay for that!

I rectified this problem with Helvetica font replacement.... Thanks .. :)
