Firefox update of 30 September 2026
So PDF's can no longer be set to open in Adobe, but it now requires clicking before the document opens in Adobe. No setting whatsoever can change this. Is this a permanent setting? Will have to move to another browser now. What a hassle. Got to move bookmarks, set up home pages etc. Ugh. Bey Firefox....

Check your settings. Downloads -> Files and Application -> PDF Document. You have Always Ask and it should be Use Windows default application or Use Adobe Acrobat Reader.
I have four PDF options under Settings.
Portable Document Format (PDF) (application/binary) Portable Document Format (PDF) (application/pdf) Portable Document Format (PDF) (application/x-download) Portable Document Format (PDF) (application/x-unknown)
All of them are set to Use Adobe Acrobat. I tried Use Adobe Acrobat (Default) too. Closing and restarting the browser after each settings change.
Also set about:config - pdfjs.disabled to True. Still get This PDF can’t be displayed here and have to click the purple Open PDF button.
Ah, this is PDF embedded in a page (with an <embed> or an <object> element) when the built-in PDF viewer is disabled. I don't have any good workaround here.
Thank you for confirming. Scheduling my exit from Firefox for after month-end then. They choose the worst of dates to chase loyal users away :-(
After switching, please paste here which browser does it differently and opens the embedded PDF in Adobe Reader. Thanks!
