Tags Folder Layout
My Tags window & folder [View, Folders, Tags] layout stopped properly displaying all my items with the appropriate "tag" set in the past few updates to T'bird. I recently switched to version 140.4.0esr but the problem existed before that in 140.2.1 as well. Is there any way to force a "rebuild" of the Tags window so that all my tagged items show in their appropriate categories, with appropriate statuses [read/unread, etc]? Otherwise, the Tag feature is no longer useful.

My Tags window & folder [View, Folders, Tags] As seen in Folder Pane. Usually 'Tags' will update the view when you click on the listed tag. So if you clicked on 'Important' - it should perform a check on everything that has been set with the 'Important' tag and refresh the display.
For example when I view mine - it's not correct until I actually select the tag name.
It's also worth checking whether you have a filter operating on the list. Check the 'Quick Filter' to see if something like 'Unread' has been enabled, because if a filter is enabled then it can even look like the list has nothing in it.
That's how things used to work. When I clicked a Tag in the Tags window, Thunderbird would take some time to "update" the list for that Tag. The larger the number of Tagged items that should display, the longer it took Thunderbird to actually display the updated list. That doesn't happen anymore.
There are no operational filters.
So for example, when I click the "Important" tag in the Tags list, the Tags list shows 2 unread items. But, when the updated Important folder shows up, the Heading says there should be 4 Messages but only 2 show; 1 read [from 2024] & 1 unread [from 2025].
I just noticed that if I toggle off the Quick Filter bar, then toggle it back on again, at least the message counts seem to sync up. But that didn't fix the display of all the messages tagged with the selected Tag entry.
And it should be noted I have 13 tags defined [1-9 and 4 that do not have a number selection]. Am I limited to the tags that are numbered 1-9? Never had a problem using this many tags in the past, even though the last 4 didn't have a number assignment.

No. I use more than the default 1-9 and have no issues.

It really does sound like you have a filter operating of some kind. Can you post an image that shows the Quick Filter bar when you have selected eg: Important
As there is one 'unread' and one 'read' - that tells us it's not a filter to only display eg: unread.
Idea: The 'Threads' column header. Has it been switched on ? That would explain why you see two in list but it says there are 4 Are the other two not seen because you are using 'threaded' view and the threads are collapsed? In Threads column there would be an icon displaying and the 'Subject' would have a > chevron ?
Did you expect to see more than 4 in the Important tag ? eg: at least 10
No, I didn't expect more than 4. I don't use that tag much. That's why I was testing with it.
So I tested this: Verified that Keep filters applied when changing folders was off. click the Important tag in the Tags window 2 messages display in the message header list: 1 read & 1 unread click the Tags filter [on] in the Quick filter bar. Count shows 4 messages but NONE display. click the Tags filter [off] in the Quick menu bar again. Count shows 4 messages and 4 display in the message header list [1 read & 3 unread]. click ANY Inbox and the message header window stills shows as Important and NO messages display.
The condition gets worse with the Tags list when I click on Tags I use more often [Financial, VA, Computer Tips, etc]. Only 2 solutions I have found so far is to keep the Quick Filter toolbar turned off [things seem to work more like they should] or restart TB and continue my work.
But the whole Tags function has gotten essentially unusable...at least for me. So I just turned the Tags folder view off.
