Release 140.4.0esr blocks email send
Dear community members, Since receiving the Thurderbird release 140.4.0esr on Oct 14th, I have not been able to send email from any of my accounts (2xIMAP and 3xoffice365 through OWL). Nothing has changed in the account settings. Receive works ok. The usual easy fixes do not seem to work (restart, firewall switch-off, etc.). Any ideas beyond having to rewind to an earlier version and rebuild the whole thing (hopefully not!)?

Thank you Matt. I had been through these steps with no luck. The SMTP settings are correct, I've tried switching firewall, antivirus etc. off, the TLS protocols are ok. None of my five email accounts send let anything out. Every message gets stuck as soon as hit send.
It seems the problem occurs before the message even reach the server since Mozilla does not offer me the spell check or address check on those accounts in which I have switched these functions on. There is no error message, the sending just stops. The message to be sent stays on the screen with no activity but can luckily be copied and closed so the whole programme is not frozen.

With no further responses to my query, it sounds like I have no choice but to rebuild the system? Heli
You could log the connection, but my personal bug bear of antivirus interference would be my guess based on the information presented, despite you thinking you have tried disabling it. Norton at least says you have it if, but it still manages to hang in there.
Thunderbird updated everything stopped and no error messages at all. That sounds like an antivirus failure. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging#Thunderbird_Logging for logging of the SMTP process.
