Have used Thunderbird for years and 2 years ago, my Cox service eliminated supporting their own emails server and now Yahoo supports. I am having a problem over the past 2 weeks where I click on my Thunderbird app to load the program and get emails, and it times out after about a minute every time I try to log in. I have deleted the Thunderbird account and tried to add a new account, and it continues to time out every time.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you using Yahoo settings?

incoming IMAP: imap.mail.yahoo.com, 993, SSL/TLS, OAuth2 authentication, email address

outgoing SMTP: smtp.mail.yahoo.com, 465, SSL/TLS, OAuth2 authentication, email address

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/mail/SLN36637.html

If you see the OAuth authentication window, enter the account, not app, password.

After changing my settings for incoming and outgoing mail servers, Thunderbird still times out. Also, I changed the yahoo server settings to imap but the server type shows as POP. Is that causing the time out problem. Here are my current settings: Yahoo Server Type: POP Mail Server pop.mail.yahoo.com Port 995 Server Name: imap.mail.yahoo.com Port 993 imap Username: <redacted>@cox.net Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: OAuth2 DOES NOT ask for account or anything else.

Description: Yahoo Outgoing server: smpt.mail.yahoo.com Port: 465 Security and Authentification: Connection security SSL/TLS Authentication method: OAuth2 User name: <redacted>@cox.net Does not connect with a time out approx. 30 seconds later.

sfhowes response....

You can't switch from POP to IMAP just by changing the settings. The account has to be added as a new IMAP account.
