I'm also experiencing these problems. I have more than 1 yahoo accounts + 1 non-yahoo account in Thunderbird. All accounts are multiple years old. Yesterday (Monday, 11-02-2025), 1 (only 1) yahoo account started experiencing the Edge.... problem. This evening, I tried the things suggested in this thread: disabled the Experimental checkboxes, deleted the problem account. I also deleted the entry for the account from the password manager. I also exited Thunderbird and re-launched it. I am unable to re-create the account, regardless of whether I select normal login or OAUTH2. But the failure is sometimes the Edge.... pop-up, sometimes an authentication failure message.

It's late; I'll retry the account re-creation in the morning. Should I go for OAUTH2 or normal login? Any other suggestions?

This has fixed it for many:

First, generate an app PW - see https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN15241.html.

Then go to TB menu > Account Settings > Server Settings and set the following:

- Server Name: export.imap.mail.yahoo.com - Port: 993 - Connection Security: SSL/TLS - Authentication method: Normal password

On the left column, scroll down and click 'Outgoing Server' and edit the Yahoo entry:

- Server Name: smtp.mail.yahoo.com - Port: 465 or 587 - Connection Security: SSL/TLS - Authentication method: Normal password

Finally, go to TB menu > Settings > Privacy & Security > Passwords

- click the 'Saved Passwords' button and edit the Yahoo entry to add your new app PW

After that's done, try logging in.

BTW, this fix is mentioned in the related [bug](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1997062).

I had some trouble following that. The instructions seemed targeted for getting into an account that's already in Thunderbird. I needed to re-create the account. I also had trouble with where to put which password (normal vs. app password), and which server is which. I also could not find a "left column". But I did get the account re-created in Thunderbird, and I can now access it. Thank-you.

Follow-up questions: 1. I have other yahoo accounts in Thunderbird. Will I have to do all this for each of those also? 2. I'm trying to put together a new Fedora desktop. When that's done, and Thunderbird is installed on it, will I have to go through this again on that new desktop?

Thank-you, again.

Did you exceed your quota on the Yahoo server?

To clarify the above statement: Quota here is meant as OAuth capacity for Thunderbird, not space capacity. "OAuth capacity" in the context of authentication failures, like those with Yahoo email and Thunderbird, generally refers to the maximum processing limit a service (like Yahoo's authorization server) has for handling OAuth-related requests within a given timeframe.

OAuth is the standard that allows an application (like Thunderbird or a web browser's mail client) to access a user's data (like their email) on a service (like Yahoo Mail) without requiring the user to share their actual password with the application. Instead, it uses temporary Access Tokens.

The authentication process involves the client app and the user going through a multi-step flow with the service's Authorization Server to get these tokens. This process is resource-intensive for the server.

In short, "OAuth capacity" is a bottleneck metric—when it's reached, even valid requests can fail due to temporary server overload. In other words, the problem is possibly some sort of overload situation on the Yahoo authorization server.

A possible workaround can be generating an App Password for Thunderbird. See https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN15241.html

Then change the Authentication method to "Normal password" in the Thunderbird server settings for the Yahoo account, and use the generated app password to login when prompted.

I'm not sure who you (christ1) are asking.

I saw no indication that any oauth2 capacity was exceeded.

My immediate problem was solved this morning with the app password that Ed and you pointed me to.

Thank-you.

Create the new accounts the old way, because the new Account Hub has some bugs: - go to TB menu > Settings > General > Account hub > uncheck 'Create accounts in the new Account Hub' - go to TB menu > New Account > Email If they do the same Edge.. thing, then yes you'll have to do them my way.

Got it (I hope!). Thank-you, Ed.

Since Yahoo changed its appearance from Basic to stupidly spaced out I decided to use Firefox for my Yahoo email as I used to have a Yahoo email account on Thunderbird but I recently got a new Windows 11 computer so had to reinstall Thunderbird.

Even though I'm using the same password as my web Yahoo mail it says it is wrong.

I tried the solution suggested by Ed on 3/11/25 by getting an app password, following the instructions and it worked - for a day. Yahoo said I would not need the App password but the normal password does not work.

So again I have to get the App Password which Thunderbird is happy with but the next day I have to get the app password again

Is there a way round this loop?

Thanks

Peter

App Password is advertised as "one time use". But in fact it should work continuously until you revoke it. If you save it to Thunderbird's password storage when you log in to the account with Thunderbird, then you should not get a login prompt again.

Thanks I did input the password and ticked the box asking the password to be remembered.

When I opened TB today it had forgotten the password and I had not copied it anywhere. I had to remove the passwords via Yahoo and do the App Password request again.

I also saved it to an Notepad file in case it forgets it tomorrow

Not sure why it does not remember

Peter

Which kind of prompt are you getting - a Thunderbird password dialog, or a yahoo oauth window?

Does an entry for the server appear in Settings > Privacy > Saved Passwords?

Also, are there multiple entries for yahoo? List them all please?

I keep getting the Thunderbird pop-up saying the password is wrong and I need to re-enter it

But I could not remember the combination of letters and numbers from yesterday

Under Thunderbird can remember passwords for all of your accounts. is Require device sign in to fill and manage passwords - but that is not ticked - should it be?

No. "Require device sign in" causes a prompt for your OS account login to use (and see) your saved passwords.

I am seeing the same error, but I'm not trying to add any accounts.

The past two days I suddenly see a window pop up with the error message: "Edge: Too many requests" Screen grab is attached.

I am only doing the following: 1. Open Thunderbird 2. Just start using email (NOT the account for which the error is generated) 3. After a minute I get the window with the error. 4. Periodically, about each 1-2 minutes, the error window reappears.

Additional information: if I click on the account in question, then I immediately see the error window pop up.
