History isn't tracking correctly.

I'm conducting research on the web but nothing is being recorded in my search history which is really annoying as I need to refer back to it at times. I can find it under recently closed tabs. Please can you advise what is going on?

In the Library window ("Manage History" or "Show All History"), what do you see if you enter http as the search term in the upper right corner search box?

If that doesn't show tons of history, Firefox could be having a problem reading/writing the database. Have you done a normal shutdown/restart of your Mac in the past week since this started? If not, I suggest doing that at your convenience to free up locked files, complete any deferred updates, and resolve any temporary file permission issues.

Next, if Firefox still has problems with bookmarks or history, could you let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

That's strange.

Usually all browsing history is recorded in regular windows and no browsing history is recorded in private windows. So if you have visited several sites, you shouldn't see just one site listed for your browsing "Today" unless you opened Gmail in a regular window and then ran all your searches in private windows. What kind of pattern do you see under "Yesterday" and "Last 7 days"?

Do you have any add-ons related to history? You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • click the Extensions button (puzzle piece) on the toolbar > Manage Extensions
  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything related to history or Google? It's also an opportunity to reconsider anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

Any leads there?

Note: Sometimes extensions can frustrate access to this page. In that case, first restart Firefox in its Troubleshot Mode and then try again. See: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox -- Open, not Refresh.

My history was tracking normally until about a week ago - not sure why it changed. I've got three extensions running, all of which were working fine: Badger Privacy, Facebook Container and DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials.

I've attached screenshots of what I can, but this is really odd. I do on occasion use NordVPN but that shouldn't interfere with Firefox recording my history.

Http search returned the few searches I could see if i looked back over the week.

The Places Database was much more revealing - screenshot below. I will restart and see if that works...

Hurrah! It worked. What is odd is that I shut the computer down last night so I would have expected today's Mozilla to be clean and ready to go. Very glad it's working now though. Thank you!

Sorry to see about the corrupted database, that happens sometimes for unknown reasons. But at least your history should work normally going forward.
