What happened to Thunderbird error log? (linux)

I used to troubleshoot when Thunderbird would fail to download new messages by looking at the last successfully downloaded email. But I can't find the error log. I'm pretty sure older versions allowed you to see the error log under Tools. But it isn't there and developer section is not helpful. I have tons of message filters going into folders so it is impossible to identify the last successful email download.

How am I to fix this issue if there is no longer a way to see failed email downloads via the error log?

I wasn't happy with the UI changes burying the menus into the hamburger on the side, but figured I could live with it. Not sure the benefit, maybe it looks cleaner? But removing functionality at the same time is really NOT helpful.

Anyone have any ideas how to find the error log or find the email causing Thunderbird to stop seeing downloadable emails?

Emails stopped downloading again.

Here is what is in the log:

The last email I seem to have received was timestamped 15:01 in thunderbird.

I deleted 8 emails in gmail spam, but it did not seem to have effect. I deleted 7 emails that came in to gmail after the last email in tbird and tbird started receiving emails again. For possible analysis, before I deleted those emails, I forwarded them to myself as attachments so that I might be able to examine them.

Not sure if this is it, but the next email to be downloaded had a subject line:

Subject: =?UTF-8?B?8J+NlSBCdWlsZCB0aGUgRVhBQ1QgUGl6emEgeW91IHdhbnQg?=

=?UTF-8?B?8J+NliDwn42NIPCfpZMg8J+ngA==?=

I'm beginning to think the issue is UTF-8 encoded subject lines...

not conclusive, but email stopped downloading again and of the last 2 emails I removed from gmail one had a UTF-8 encoded subject line.

Stopped downloading again.

The last email to download was about "[8/31/25, 09:10:07 GMT-4] Applied filter" according to the filter log. Inbox shows last email at about 08:00.

I understand little of these log items. I'm focusing first on "NetworkTimeoutError". Tell us more about your environment. Are you using a VPN? A network filter? Block lists? How reliable is your network?

@Rick - no VPN, I have PFsense as my firewall/router but with no special config. Network is very reliable. I have no problems with firefox browsing all the while Thunderbird is having its issues.

I did open a bugzilla ticket.

Additionally, it appears I got things working again by drastically cleaning out the amount of email sitting in the gmail account. So maybe it was a scale problem, though the behavior was puzzling since I was able to hobble forward by selectively deleting emails.

Hello there

One of these subject that e-mail and data are clustered in that inbox might be true.

Go to account settings go to the copies and folders section and ensure that drafts are saved to a mentioned draft folder or submap. Not your inbox. Bugs might be created that way for the Thunderbird program. How sure are you that you are using a reliable network, can I ask?

Greetings googlethunderbird.

The network is very reliable.

Since I cleaned out large numbers of emails, Thunderbird has been working flawlessly. I suspect I will not be seeing issues with download for some time.

Email drafts go to a separate draft folder in both Thunderbird and gmail.
