You're doing that with the download of the 4,800 messages. For POP accounts, thunderbird has a file called popstate.dat that keeps track of the last downloaded message. That file was corrupted with your crash, so thunderbird has no idea from where to resume and starts over. To protect against this, doing periodic backups will minimize the number of messages to redownload.
