Restart to update Firefox
Recently clicked to update to the next version of Firefox. Then I get the message "Restart to Update Firefox." I restart Firefox but the message is still there when I click Help > About Firefox. It would appear that the update did not happen for some reason. Do I need to re-install Firefox to get around this problem?

Thanks for the reply. Not sure exactly what was going on, but I logged out of my user account, and when I logged back in, it was fixed. So, Problem solved. Thanks
I'm here for the same reason only a few days after the original post and after I'd downloaded the latest update. What I need to be clear on is exactly what you mean by ""Restart to Update Firefox." Because I keep restarting Firefox and then not seeing that the update has taken place when I click on the About Firefox menu item to check on it.
So now the question: Restart FIREFOX or restart the computer after the attempted install?
Eventually the last update worked the same way, but we had shut down the computer after that and went on about our business. After restart of the COMPUTER, Mac to be specific, the latest Firefox was in place.
maxglitz,
My issue sounds like it was (is) the same as yours. I have my settings set so Firefox checks for updates, but I choose when to download and install. So I get the notification that there's an update available, I download it then get the message that Firefox needs to be restarted to apply it. There's the issue. Even after multiple clicks on that link, it doesn't update, even after multiple closing and reopening of Firefox. And for no reason that I can figure out, that link goes away, and after a check for updates, shows that Firefox is up to date. Like it has a mind of it's own.

Pennypincher, Exactly describes my experience.
I turn off my PC every night, then on again in the morning. This morning (03/28/2025) when I started Firefox a message showed up briefly that Firefox was updating and I needed to shutdown Firefox, which I did. After a restart, Firefox Help > About shows "Firefox is up to date 136.0.4". It's almost as if some digital settings had gone out of sync for a few days. In any case it's good to go ... at least for now.
I've been seeing the same issue on windows and linux for a few updates now. Update and restart the browser, but it still doesn't update. I just ignore it and eventually it updates. Doesn't happen with Nightly.

Let me add even MORE to this fresh hell: Two of us use this Mac, each having to log in to use it. FYI for non-Mac users here: Two can't be logged in at the same time. I logged the other person out after closing his open Firefox and then logged back in on my account.
Still feeling skittish about this whole process, I once gain selected "About Firefox" in the upper menu on the screen and got THIS. "Firefox is being updated by another instance."
It took restarting the Mac again to clear out that apparent silliness.
Now this comes after I checked Firefox for both of us users and seeing that it was up to date. I've seen no notice of an automatic update since I joined this thread.
I don't know if Mozilla checks these support posts, and I certainly can't find a place on their site to report this. All I see are the multitudes of FAQ sorts of things you have browse through forever for the problem. A place for feedback or problems either doesn't exist, or is just made to be difficult to find. Kind of common these days.
In your case, where there is another user, is it a stretch to think that the other user ended with the update in progress and you closed it w/o thinking of an update in progress? And said update picked up when you signed in? I don't use mac - in linux, your shut down would have been warned of an update or other some other process still working.
From looking into the Bugzilla thread, I see this problem is two months old. It has been worked on steadily since then.
I assume that the folks at Mozilla will fix it and that the fix will be included in an update, and will be noted in the Release Notes.
For now, I get around it by manually closing FF, watching the Resource Monitor, and when RM shows no more activity I restart FF.
I'll wait and watch for the update that fixes it.

Thanks Greg.
Hello
jonzn4SUSE, you've deleted your video demonstration?
Clarification : at one point in my video under Windows, a black screen appears. That's normal, it's my strategy, the time it takes to answer Yes in the "User Account Control" (UAC) dialog box.
The news from here: V.137.0 , 19.2 MB, is available. Downloaded it and mashed the "Restart to Update" button.
Nope. Still stuck on 136.0.4 .
Will do the FF shut down/restart routine.

Hello again!
Closed FF. Watched the Resource Monitor. It showed a little activity, and I let it calm down.
Opened FF. The screen FLASHED very quickly, as it has done each time previously with this workaround, (but NEVER when doing a "Restart to Update" before this problem came up.}
The "What's new with Firefox?" page opened. Now on V 137.0 . But no mention of any fix for this problem.
