Restart to update Firefox
Recently clicked to update to the next version of Firefox. Then I get the message "Restart to Update Firefox." I restart Firefox but the message is still there when I click Help > About Firefox. It would appear that the update did not happen for some reason. Do I need to re-install Firefox to get around this problem?

As of 04-Mar-2025 when Firefox v136.0.0 was released I've had same problem updating Firefox on my Win 10 laptop. I normally update by triggering a manual check for updates at Help | About Firefox, but when I click the "Restart to Update Firefox" button shown in the attached image my browser automatically closes and re-opens without applying the update and Help | About Firefox displays the same "Restart to Update Firefox" button.
Since 04-Mar-2025 I've had to restart Windows before I see the expected UAC prompt to allow the Firefox Updater to proceed with the update. I don't know if it's relevant, but before going to Help | About Firefox to install the latest FF v137.0.1 (rel. 08-Apr-2025) I disabled my Malwarbytes Premium real-time protection first, and even though the "Restart to Update Firefox" button didn't work I found that manually exiting Firefox myself and then relaunching my browser (i.e.. without a full Windows restart) was enough to trigger the UAC prompt to start the Firefox Updater.
This seems to be a widespread problem. Several users posting in the 11-Apr-2025 AskWoody topic Firefox 137 have noticed the same update failure after clicking the "Restart to Update Firefox" button for the past month or so.

The v137.0.2 release notes at https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/137.0.2/releasenotes/ posted on 15-Apr-2025 suggest the problem is fixed [“Fixed an issue that caused some Firefox users to restart their browser multiple times to complete an update. (Bug 1959492")] but my update to v137.0.2 was even more problematic than previous updates.
This time I had to do a full restart of Windows and then manually launch Firefox before I saw the UAC prompt to run Firefox Software Updater (see attached image) and complete the update v137.0.2.

Stop misleading your users, Mozilla. This has not been fixed. The only reliable solution to get Firefox updated is to close it completely in Task Manager. Then, when starting Firefox, the update feature finally works. Can you provide explanations? This makes you look unreliable and unprofessional
Well, it looks as if I will not be updating to V 137.0.2 just yet. In Bugzilla, Robin Steuber seems to indicate that there is one more update to come before this is fixed.
Patience, Grasshopper.

I just noticed if I Quit and then open the browser, it updates to the new version.

If you read through the bugzilla thread you will see that substantial effort has gone into fixing this.
FF V 137.0.2 has the fix.
But remember "Update-related fixes often mean you need to update TO the fixed version before updates work correctly the next time you update."
Thanks to all who worked to make it happen.

Hi Larz:
I can confirm this bug appears to be fixed on my system as well. My manual update (Help | About Firefox) from Firefox v137.0.2 to 138.0.0 ran normally today - the UAC prompt shown in my attached image for the Firefox Software Updater popped up on its own immediately after I clicked the “Restart to Update Firefox” button.
