I'm afraid I've tinkered around too much while not knowing what I'm really doing. it seems as though I've caused havoc and can't tell where/what I've done wrong. Its astounding how convoluted site disclaimers can be for cookies, ads, info sharing etc., and my tiny brain isn't savvy enough to know how to protect myself without going overboard. Is there a way to reset default settings and start over using a tutorial or something?

No one here can know what happened on your side to your computer and you will have to take it to a computer shop to diagnosis the problem here.
