Thunderbird fails during the shutdown process. When the "X" is clicked the main screen goes away and the Windows Task bar icon shows inactive. However, if you watch Windows task manager Thunderbird is using 15 to 25% of the CPU. This may go on for a minute or more after which it will fail with an error and the Thunderbird error screen is displayed. This has been going on for 8 or 10 months now and I have ignored it it because it didn't cause me any problems. I have submitted probably 100 error reports on this. I'm running 115.5.1 (64 bit) under Windows 11.

The only extension I'm running is BirdieSync but Thunderbird fails even with this disabled. I found an old incident related to BitDefender but I do not now and have never run that extension.

This has become a very high priority of late. One of my eMail accounts has changed their sever settings. I need to make changes to that account in Thunderbird. However, because of this failure (i presume) the changes to the account are never saved and I have to remake them ever time I have to restart Thunderbird.

Anne,

Does Raymond's description at the top of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1433409 match your steps to reproduce?

Wayne, yes, very similar. When Thunderbird is open there are four instances of thunderbird.exe visible in the task manager. I hit File | Exit, and the GUI remains open for around a minute, then the GUI closes, and three of the four .exes disappear from task manager, the fourth disappears a few seconds later.

However, while going over this again I noticed something, the message in the bottom left corner of the interface was referring to my Outlook account "sending secure login information to ...@outlook.com". I checked the settings on that account in Thunderbird and set it to never check for new messages (it's a rarely-used account), and not to empty the deleted folder on exit, and since doing that TB has behaved perfectly.

So (at least in my case), not a bug, rather some failure to connect to the office365 mail server.

I unchecked the options that Anne noted on my one Outlook account but it had no effect. Thunderbird still failed during shutdown.

When I exit Thurderbird the GUI process exits and only one of the other processes remains running. It is using a relatively hi CPU. Tonight it was about 22%. After about 30 seconds I then get the failure message and this process has exited.
