all of the sudden all messages are downloaded and immediately disappear. Also all folders appear empty. I cannot access anything I have saved, neither can I keep received messages in the mailbox.

Do you have View/Folders set only to All, and View/Threads set to All? Any filters set on the Quick Filter Bar?
