I am using Firefox on a desktop and recently upgraded to 112. I have been trying for the last 6 months to SHORTEN the address bar (NO, I do NOT use Search on Firefox) and cannot find an answer anywhere. I am completely exasperated at all controls Firefox has taken away from users the past few years and this is the final straw before I leave you. PLEASE tell me how to REALLY shorten the god-awful length of the url bar so I can see more addons ON the desktop. Thank you very much.

Hi Rob, the address bar sizes itself automatically to use the available space. It has some minimum width below it will not go, but you should have at least half of the toolbar for buttons.

Two initial things to check:

I assume you already removed the "spacers" that are used to center the address bar on a new installation, but just in case: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Starting in Firefox 109, if you want an add-on button to appear on the main part of the toolbar, you need to "pin" it there from the new Extensions button drop-down. See: Manage your extensions using the extensions button in the toolbar.

Assuming there is still a problem:

How much space is your address bar taking up?

I have taken the actions you suggested. Picture of my desktop top is attached. I don't need all the space for the address bar. It's way too much. My resolution I use is 1600x900. Thanks for trying.

Your System Details show that you have 25 extensions installed and only a few are currently positioned on the Navigation Toolbar. Did you click the puzzle piece icon and the at the right end of the Navigation Toolbar as that is where you manage your extensions in current releases ?

Firefox 109 comes with the new Extensions button as the new way to manage your extensions. The Extensions button (puzzle piece icon) drop-down serves as overflow area for extensions you install, the classic chevron (>>) overflow area still exists but is only used for built-in toolbar buttons as found in the Customize palette. You can click the gear icon next to an extension or use the right-click context menu to pin the extension to the toolbar (Pin to Toolbar). To (re)move the extension from the toolbar back to the Extensions button drop-down, you can use "Unpin from Toolbar" in the right-click context menu.
