changed layout and font in incoming messages - have to click on a link within the text to convert back to normal layout
in Thunderbird incoming messages are now not being displayed in the usual manner. They look really weird, there is always a link there which when I click on it the message including any pictures goes back to the normal look. All I have changed was to uncheck paragraph format so I could get single line spacing. Even when I revert this action, now the messages still look wrong. think its something to do with html thing, but I have tried selecting all of the options one at a time, and nothing gets it back to the correct look! I am at my wits end trying to get this to work properly - please can anyone help?

the "All I have changed was to uncheck paragraph format so I could get single line spacing." is entirely in the writing of emails, not the display. SO has nothing to do with this.
Unfortunately "now the messages still look wrong." does not really tell me much about either what you are seeing or what you expect to see. I suggest as a wild guess that you ensure the View menu entry "message body as" is set to original HTML as this at time can be the cause of a screwy look to emails. Otherwise I suggest you upload a screen shot of what it is you are actually seeing so we are all on the same page.
This link offers advice on creating screen shots in windows 10 and 11. Once you have the image save it as a PNG file and upload it to a reply using the browse button below the text entry box on the forum.
