Hi Forum Folke!

Since I updated Tbird recently (running 102.1.2), a lot of my emails are coming prefaced with "****SPAM****" and while some of them *are* spam, many of them are not, and I'd like to find out how to tell Tbird that these emails are NOT spam, and get them re-classified, or removed from the "spam" category in future emails. Any idea how to go about this? Thanks!

Dear kharrisma,

To my knowledge, Tbird never prefaces emails with "****SPAM****"; an indication is that there is no such option you can activate or deactivate in the settings. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-junk-spam-messages - all Tbird does is move messages to the "Junk" folder and/or use the "Junk" status flag / label. Therefore I presume that the "****SPAM****" prefix was added at the server level, when the email was originally received by your provider. I also use the latest v102 with six different mail accounts, and have not encountered any emails marked with "****SPAM****". Maybe it's just a coincidence? I do generally observe that spam seems to wax and wane seemingly erratically.

Generally, it's preferable to train your email system to detect junk mail at server level (webmail login), because once emails are marked or filtered there already, there's little Tbird can do.

Another key function for avoiding emails getting classed as spam is having the senders' addresses stored in your address book. Maybe on updating, your address book didn't port over?

I hope this helps a bit.
