I access my Scotia iTrade discount broker account through 64-bit Firefox (Windows 10).

iTrade comes with a streaming stock app that uses Java (64 bit). When operating properly, I "launch" Flightdesk and it automatically opens.

Now, it is prompting me to save the JNLP files. I can save it and then open up file manager and click on the file and finally open up Flightdesk. I would rather avoid all that.

Suggestsions?

Chosen solution

This time I managed to solve it by going through Default Apps/Choose default apps by file type, and then scrolling down to .jnlp where I would choose Java™ Web Start Launcher (with logo) as opposed to the plain Jane Java™ Web Launcher.

If the proper Java application does not show automatically then choose More Apps option, and look for jawvaws.exe in the Program Files folder, e.g., Program Files > Java > jre1.8.0_321 > bin. Double-click on the javaws.exe application.

To remove the prompt for Flightdesk to open:

1. Type about:config in the URL bar of a new tab. 2. Accept the Risk and Continue 3. Paste name of new preference -- browser.download.skipConfirmLaunchExecutable – in the search preference space. 4. Click the + sign on the right. 5. Leave it a true.

There was a similar thread around the same time as yours this morning: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1367528 (unsolved).

Generally speaking, JNLP files have been treated as "executable" for a long time now, and should have been equally difficult to open before (forced save). But maybe an exception crept in that made it easier than I remember?

By the way, you can launch the file directly from the Downloads list (click the Downloads button on the toolbar, then the download name).
