Unable to log in at server.
I know that there are a lot of posts on this subject but none of the "solutions" will work for me or seem to be very specific. I have Thunderbird version 91.5.0 on Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS and I am trying to set up a gmail account and I get stuck in the authentication loop, I am using Oauth2 with all the standard settings. I confirm it on my phone (2 factor authentication) then I get the dreaded error after this clicking on the Done button starts the loop off again. I have Thunderbid for this account setup on a windows 10 and windows 11 machines both on 91.5.0 and I have no problems but the Linux version does not work at all, google seems happy with the authentication, I get no errors etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks

You may have already done the following ...but...Couple of checks:... When creating the account - you need to select checkbox to 'Remember Password' Do you have cookies enabled? They need to enabled to accept the token Menu app icon > Preferences select: Privacy & Security 'Web Content' sub section Select 'Accept Cookies from sites'
Exit and restart Thunderbird to ensure all prefs are fully updated
Modified
Hi, I can confirm that cookies are enabled, and accept third-party cookies is set to "always" and the remember password tick-box is checked. Actually these are the default settings anyhow so there was no need to change anything. Just a note that after I have clicked the Allow button from the google oauth popup, this popup then closes and it instantaneously goes to the yellow error message "Unable to log in at server...." which makes me think that it is not even trying to connect to a server. I would maybe expect a little delay before any error message appears.
I have tried everything I can, I have crosschecked the settings against my working windows 11 config but this issue still persists in Linux only, I have probably gone through the setup 20 times now every time it is the same result. As Google seems quite happy with the authentication I guess this is a bug with the Linux version of TB (version 91.5.0). Can someone advise on what logs I could collect so I can submit this to bugzilla? Thanks
I'm wondering if there is a problem with ports or allowing Thunderbird access to internet.
Check Firewall. Ubuntu does come with a Firewall but I'm not sure if it is enabled by default. Thunderbird would need to be listed as an allowed program in order to get access to the internet or perhaps ports need to allowed. Some useful info: https://www.linuxtechi.com/top10-things-after-installing-ubuntu-18-04/ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UncomplicatedFirewall
Do you know if the version of Thunderbird is a 32bit or 64bit?
Help > About Thunderbird - would tell you info.
There may be an issue using 32-bit Thunderbird (and Firefox) on 64-bit systems where you could get failed to connect to server problem.
So you could try this:
Menu app icon > Preferences > select 'General'
Scroll to bottom and click on 'Config editor' button
In search type: ipv
Set "network.dns.disableIPv6" to true.
then restart Thunderbird to ensure setting are being used.
Test creating account.
Alternative would be to uninstall 32bit and then download 64bit from here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/
Hi, I have success.
I have a 64bit system and thunderbird was the 32 bit version. The firewall is not active, I should probably activate it!, I changed the IPV settings, restarted still no joy. So I uninstalled and reinstalled via thunderbird.net, the link said 64bit but when I installed it was still the 32bit version, don't know why that was. However when I went though the 2 factor authentication again this time it worked and this time it took a few seconds to actually check the password, so I am pretty sure thunderbird didn't even attempt to do any checking previously, and now it is all working. Thank you very much for your help, if is very much appreciated.
Just to note this version of linux was updated from a version that was 5 years old, its an old pc that I thought I would try to make use of, thunderbird was probably installed but I hadn't used it at that time. So it did a ton of updates, thunderbird included and I guess the thunderbird update although the most up-to date version has not gone so well, maybe there is some old config that is not helping the software connect. Anyhow thanks again for your help.
