Sorting bookmarks

Hello, I have tried numerous times to sort my bookmarks alphabetically. They are not in a folder. The sort works while in that window but I cannot save the sort. Next time I open bookmarks it is a jumble again. I have reviewed several answers but none work. I am puzzled as to why something so simple does not work. Help needed - I am technically challenged. Thanks Ivor
