Hi. I am using Thunderbird 91.2.1 (64 bit) an issue has started with a couple of g-mail accounts. When I write a message in the Thunderbird and select which email address to send it with e.g. the one I use for personal e-mails and press send everything appears to work as it should. It then came to my attention that people were replying to my other g-mail address used for or holistic work. I checked the send folders and the sent e-mails where in both. I have a third address non- google and sent a test mail to it for my private email and which it received and then it received a duplicate message from the holistic address. How do I separate the mails. There is a 3rd gmail account which at the moment appears unaffected. The mails share the same security and Auth: settings ssl/tls and OAuth2. and server name imap.gmail.com port 993 default 993. I checked the edit SMTP sever box in the accounts sections. STMP is smtp.gmail.com port 465 default 465 security and auth: as about the user name however is the same in both accounts. If I correct it in one account it appears iin the other account with the same name. I can not get the accounts to accept the correct user names for each account. There was a recent update (automatic) which causes the preference settings to stop or freeze. Other programs run very slow or stop then and it appears that when the preferences are loaded (?) it takes up all available memory. This good be a separate issue and require a separate question. I am running Thunderbird and Firefox under UK English and I have the LT extension loaded for spell checking . The O.S system is Windows 7 sp1 . home edition on an Acer Aspire 5733 750GB HDD Thank you for any help.

I am not a computer wizz kid if you'll excuse the old expression, I can muddle my way through so please bear with me if you need more precise information.

I think we can mark this solved. First I updated to 91.3 TB. I found that in account left hand pane, that at the bottom below local is outgoing serve. From here I deleted required smpt settings. I could then identify which setting applied to which account. Changing the incorrect email address here applied the change to the smtp edit box in the accounts sections. Now everything matched up. However, the corrected account had to be registered with google, and the account that was marked as default gave me error messages about smtp, either incorrect, not recognized or smtp timed out. This problem lasted all afternoon. Having turned the computer of for several hours, I now found both problematic emails seem to be working as they should. Thunderbird preferences is still a problem. Causing thunderbird to stop responding and it appears to take up all the memory? slowing the computer - a problem for another day. Thank you sfhowes and Alex for your guidence and help.

In order for us to better investigate this issue, we'll need some more information.

Could you please do the following?

  1. Open the menu Fx57Menu > Help > Troubleshooting Information, then click Copy text to Clipboard.
  2. Go to https://pastebin.com, paste the info from your Troubleshooting Information page, use the Create New Paste button to create a page containing your info, then copy the resulting URL (address) of the page created.
  3. Open a reply to this post, and paste the link to your troubleshooting information you just copied.

Next, we'll need you to provide answers to the following questions:

  • Does Thunderbird work in troubleshooting mode?
  • Do you use anti-virus and firewall software? What is the version?
  • Who is the email provider?
  • Who is the internet provider?
  • What is the exact error message?
  • What steps did you take right before this happened?

You have to create separate smtp servers for each account, and make sure each account sends on an smtp with a matching User Name. Otherwise, gmail will apply the User Name of the smtp, even if the sending account has a different User Name.

Thank you your your replies. Alex I will try to collect all the information and send as requested. sfhowes: I read your reply and followed the link. Then checked the account / outgoing smtp settings. Both accounts show the correct match of user name to account /e-mail in the outgoing smtp box. As I said in the original post (and have rechecked) when checking account/ outgoing server/ edit smtp server / server setting /user name - only one of the of the user name matches the account/ e-mail. When I attempted to type the correct name to match the account, the name I type shows in both account edit boxes. The account / outgoing smtp settings remain unchanged and correct. In sort the outgoing smtp settings and the edit box don't match. I did notice that the outgoing server smtp has a default setting of Google mail - smtp.gmail.com (Default) and an alternative setting of google mail - smtp.googlemail.com I seem to remember that one of these settings caused problems in the past, i don't know if any of that is relevant. Thanks again.

Does Thunderbird work in troubleshooting mode? Yes. It sent mail as it should do, but requested a receipt when the box is not ticked in the account settings
Do you use anti-virus and firewall software? What is the version? Eset Internet security 14.2.24
Who is the email provider? For the accounts in question Google gmail.
Who is the internet provider? Talk Talk.
What is the exact error message? No error message. Observed issue.
What steps did you take right before this happened? Noted update for Thunderbird which installed -not 100% sure on time frame. Open to write message, selected the e-mail to send from in the drop down box. Select recipient, Typed message, sent message. Observed problem when replies came in on the other e-mail address.

hope that helps Alex. Thanks again.

Your pastebin has been removed. Just copy the Mail & News Accounts section of Help/More Troubleshooting into a reply. Don't mix servers containing gmail.com and googlemail.com. Use gmail.com in all incoming and outgoing servers.

Hi sfhowes. Here is the help /mail news info

ID Incoming server Outgoing servers Name Connection security Authentication method Name Connection security Authentication method Default? account1 (pop3) mx.freenet.de:995 SSL/TLS Normal password mx.freenet.de:465 SSL/TLS Encrypted password true account2 (none) Local Folders None Normal password account3 (imap) imap.googlemail.com:993 SSL/TLS OAuth2 smtp.gmail.com:465 SSL/TLS OAuth2 true account4 (imap) mail.btinternet.com:993 SSL/TLS Normal password mail.btinternet.com:465 SSL/TLS Normal password true account5 (rss) Feeds None Normal password account6 (rss) Feeds-2 None Normal password account7 (imap) imap.gmail.com:993 SSL/TLS OAuth2 smtp.gmail.com:465 SSL/TLS OAuth2 true account8 (rss) Feeds-3 None Normal password account9 (imap) imap.gmail.com:993 SSL/TLS OAuth2 smtp.gmail.com:465 SSL/TLS OAuth2 true If you need a clearer image, try screen shot 3 of the original inquiry. screenshot 2 was for updates. Thank you for continued aid.

Account 1, the authentication method for the outgoing should be 'normal password'.

Account 3, the incoming should be imap.gmail.com.

The rest looks OK, but you must have 3 smtp servers in Account Settings, Outgoing Server (SMTP), on smtp.gmail.com, each with User Names corresponding to the 3 gmail accounts, and each account must have the correct smtp selected in the right pane of Account Settings when the account is selected in the left pane. That information isn't possible to convey in the pictures or text.

Hi sf. Thanks again. I have made the changes as outlined in your reply and checked the accounts for matching smtp etc. The details on the Server settings page match with the account names in the left panel. I have tried to produce a table of the account / smtp settings user name account name please see screen shot. I then tried to correct the user name in the stmp edit box -results below. After changing smtp user name in the smtp edit on the accounts settings page to match the correct settings for each account account and server. The name typed into the smtp edit user name box for account 2 had been copied into the smtp edit user name box of account 1. Correcting account 1 -retyping the correct user name reverses the process. In sort two separate accounts use the same email address in the SMTP edit box. But not in any other settings, account or server settings. All user names in the smpt edit box are shown as the email address for that account. (Incorrectly in one case) In all three accounts al other settings in the smtp edit box appear correct. (I had hoped to paste and copy the table into this box but it didn't paste in as planned. Had to resort to snippit and upload image.) Thank you once again for your time and patience.

Preferences are known to hang if there are language packs in Tools/Add-ons & Themes/Languages (dictionaries are OK). If you don't have any, make sure the profile folder is an exclusion in antivirus settings or turn off any kind of Mail Shield etc.

Hi sfhowes. I think we have found the issue. I have removed (disabled) the language pack for English UK. This seems to have restore the preference setting to a usable state. The pack has been installed for a while, so I am not sure when or why the error(?) occurred. But for now we can tick this one solved. Thanks once again for your help.
