I've been unable to open Google Maps for the last couple of months, or so. It doesn't matter whether I try directly through a Google search, or from within another website.

Google Maps uses WebGL, so you can possibly check the Graphics section on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page.
