Hi!, Due to a dell laptop (win 10) with a bad keyboard, and I have co-ordination issues, somehow deleted a lot of mail into gmail which labelled it as spam, trashed it and thunderbird seemed to be under control of gmail and deleted all messages too. It was supposed to keep EVERYTHING.

1. Can i get that mail back? I wasn't backing up but after i've been copying profile.

2. Trying to adjust text size and can't scroll to the file since everything is too big for the window but found this - hopefully ok to post screenshots.

If you have lost a load of emails from a gmail account then this link may offer help to try and get them back on the server. https://support.google.com/a/answer/112445?hl=en

If you have a gmail imap account in Thunderbird: Gmail will empty the 'Spam' and the 'Trash' folder (which is sometimes called 'Bin') every 30 days. You cannot change this, gmail have full control. You can choose to Empty those folders earlier than 30 days.

Check account settings to see if you have set up for Deleted emails going to go Spam or Trash and also if set up to Empty Spam and Trash in Thunderbird.

  • Right click on imap mail account name folder in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Left pane - Select 'Server Settings'

When I delete a message:

  • Select 'Move it to this folder' and choose the 'Trash on gmail email address account'

Under 'Message Storage'

  • uncheck if selected 'Empty Deleted folder on Exit'

If that is selected you could find your Trash is emptied everytime you exit Thunderbird.

now check to see if you have spam being emptied as well. Left Pane - Click on 'Junk Settings' At the bottom - Destination and Retention Select 'Move new junk messages to:' Select 'Other' and choose 'Spam on gmail email address account'

Do you have the the following selected ? 'Automatically delete junk mail older than' If yes, then this may explain why spam was deleted - suggest you uncheck that checkbox.

re :somehow deleted a lot of mail into gmail which labelled it as spam Sounds like you highlighted several emails - note: keys 'Ctrl' + 'A' will select all emails in a folder. If you had select emails and then pressed a shortcut key, Thunderbird would have performed as requested. eg: Pressing the 'J' letter on keyboard will mark as junk

To be honest I could guess several scenarios.

re: image you posted. What is the size of the screen you are using? Do you find all the text - font size in Thunderbird is too big?

Do you find all the text in any program is too big? What screen resolution are you using? In windows search type: bigger select 'Make everything bigger' You can then adjust the size of text by using slider bar to reduce size. Perhaps it is set too large.

'Change the size of apps and text on the main display:' default is 100% - if you are much larger eg: 150% try reducing.

re : and deleted all messages too. What messages - do you mean only the emails that were put into Spam and Trash ? Or are you saying every email in all folders has just been deleted and you cannot find anything?

Your posted image does say it is downloading 52 emails to Inbox Does it seem normal to suddenly have 52 emails being downloaded to Inbox? Do any of those emails look familiar? Is it as if your gmail account has been recreated as new and is suddenly redownloading a load of emails?

I have it set up to keep mail not to delete mail. I did find TBs spam folder FULL of LEGIT IMPORTANT mail, eg from the CRA, invoices, etc. I'm only going to forward from yahoo/rogers accounts... I know gmail tries AI & puts messages in various folders not the inbox; TB doesn't do that does it? Thanks again PS I'll do the display issues tomorrow. I have been having major issues with text, window size horizontal scroll bars etc.
