Cannot send mails using TB

more options

Using TB (version 78.13.0, used on MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) with MacOS 10.14.6 Mojave) I can send and receive messages without problem when at home and connected through the box of my IAP (Free, in France). However, when travelling, although I still receive my mails, I receive the following error message when trying to send one from TB: "An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.7.1 <unknown[37.164.64.109]:64568>: Client host rejected: Access denied." Note that the SMTP server settings I use are the same as those that work fine at home; moreover I have the same settings on my iPhone and I have no problem sending mail from the iPhone.

The SMTP settings I use are: Server name: smtp.free.fr Port: 465 User name: me Authentication method: no authentication (but the situation is the same if I use "normal password" Connection security SSL/TLS

Is there anything that should be changed in my TB settings to correct this?

Thanks for your help!

Jean-Paul

The authentication should definitely be 'normal password', but have you entered the full email address for the User Name?

I have put only myname, my full address being myname@free.fr. As I said, this setting works from home with TB, it works on my iPhone, it's just when I use TB on my computer away from home that it doesn't work

Try it at home with the full address, and if it still works, try it away from home. Also, if you have multiple accounts, check that the Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the right pane of Account Settings, when the sending account is selected in the left pane, has the same User Name as the sending account.

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, the problem is the same if I put the full address for the user name. And the user name in the smtp setting is the same as in the sending account...

Do you have a security/antivirus scanning outgoing mail or secure connections? If so, disable any options that refer to email. Also, some Mac users experience problems if the setting in Preferences/General/Network & Disk Space, Connection, is not 'No proxy'.

I do have an antivirus but it doesn't scan the mails. Moreover, as I said, I do not change any setting whatsoever between using TB at home and using it outside, it's the same computer with the same settings as well, and I'm able to send mails from home, but not able when away from home.

I wouldn't always expect email to work the same on the home network as it does when you're connecting through a different network. Authentication of an ISP account while connected to the ISP's network is often less strict than when connecting through a non-ISP network.

That may be true, but it still doesn't explain why, using the very same SMTP setting I can send a mail from my phone, but not my Mac from the location X (outside my home). Moreover, this is the same thing when I use my phone to access to Internet with my Mac, so they presumably are using the same non-ISP network!
