At the end of June I was in the hospital and was not able to use my computer until about the second week of July. When I tried to use Thunderbird I kept getting incorrect password errors. My email is Verizon.net which is now located at AOL.com.

I tried to log into AOL.com and needed to reset my password. Once I did I was then able to read my email on the AOL web site. So I then started Thunderbird, entered this new password when Thunderbird said to enter a a correct password, but it kept giving me an incorrect password message. I've tried entering it several times and still get the same error.

Any idea what I need to do? I have no problem going to AOL.com and reading and sending email from there but I want to use Thunderbird.

I've added a jpg file that shows how my password setting are and noticed that the account efberney@verizon.net reads smtp at the start and this account does work in Thunderbird, but my account fsberney@verizon. starts with mailbox://pop

Could this be the issue and if so how do I change that setting?

Thank you for your help.

Fred

Log into the account on the AOL site and create an app password for TB:

https://help.aol.com/articles/Create-and-manage-app-password

Remove the Verizon mailbox:// and smtp:// passwords from Saved Passwords, restart TB, enter the app password when asked for a password.

Well I thought your answer was working, but I'm finding that each time I open Thunderbird and attempt to either send or receive email, I need to go through the same proceedure of getting a unique password for using Thunderbird on AOL.

The message I get from AOL when it creates the password is that I need not save it since it is only to be used once. Am I doing something wrong? I don't think I found the place to manage third party passwords, the only link I found on AOL is to create a password and that is all it allows me to do. I can't enter anything. It just pops up the password and when I use it in Thunderbird instead of my regular AOL password, it allows me to retrieve emails and to send some. But then if I try this again, I get the password error even if I don't close Thunderbird.

Please keep in mind I'm a novas as far as understanding how emails are actually sent and received. What I liked about Thunderbird, is that I just had to enter my email address and Thunderbird entered all the necessary information to make it work. I didn't have to decide if it was pop or any of the other types of email systems.

I can follow instruction, but I really don't understand what the different options mean.

Thank you again for your help. And as I mentioned before the other two email accounts are working just fine in Thunderbird. fberney201@comcast.net and efberney@verizon.net

It is just the fsberney@verizon.net and in the jpg I added to my last question, the first pat of the description of the fsberney@verizon.net is different from the other two. But I have no idea how to change that description within Thunderbird. If that is the issue, then would you please walk me through the steps to make those changes in the fsberney@verizon.net account.

The SMTP is the start of the efberney and the fberney201 accounts and they are working fine in Thunderbird. fsberney@verizon.net starts with "mailbox" and maybe that is the issue.

Thank you.

In the Saved Logins window, delete the entry for mailbox://... for fsberney, then open Tools/Account Settings, Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom left pane, and add an smtp server smtp.verizon.net on 465, SSL/TLS. authentication = normal password, User Name = fsberney. Then, you will have 2 Verizon smtp servers, one each for efberney and fsberney. Next, select the fsberney account in the left pane of Account Settings and set Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the right pane to the smtp server with the fsberney User Name (click Edit SMTP server... to check). Repeat with the efberney account and set it to send on the smtp with efberney as the User Name.

Then, restart TB and enter the app password that was created for each account, and check the box to have it stored in Saved Passwords. There should be separate app passwords for fsberney and efberney.

To complicated for this 61 year old. I'll just use the AOL web version and uninstall thunderbird. Thanks anyway.

It's pretty easy to do, I did it yesterday 12/11/21 after 3 days of not receiving verizon emails. I didn't delete the mailbox, just used the generated password.
