gmail not working with TH 78.11

more options

I run Mac High Sierra (OS 10.13) on a MacBookPro, using TH 78.11

TH has been working seamlessly with my Gmail but within the past week now freezes regularly on both sending and receiving. I get error messages telling me I can't connect to the server or messages that the server timed out. A couple of times I've been asked to input my password again.

I have a second email account that downloads to TH (not a Gmail account) and it still works fine.

About once a day the system seems to unfreeze and my Gmails download. I've looked at all the Mozilla support help pages and tried all the steps: changed the security settings, checked that the account settings were correct (they were), but went ahead and experimented with different settings to see if it made any difference. I cleared the cache, I restarted TH, I rebooted the computer...nothing worked.

BTW, my Gmail is set up as a POP account. My wife's Gmail is set up as an IMAP account and she is having identical problems to me. We tried all the various fixes on her MacBook, but no success there, either.

Can anyone offer a solution? Thank you!

Hello brucegwhite. I have a suspicion that your issue may be related to mine ( https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1340621 ) and mccfrank's ( https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1340573 )

Maybe it is a coincidence that mccfrank and I are both running Debian Bullseye. But it is possible that this issue is on the Mozilla side, not Debian. Did this issue start after a recent update? Do you get any kind of error message similar to my and mccfrank's? NS_ERROR_NET_INADEQUATE_SECURITY

Thanks for the response. The issue DID start after a recent update. However, I have not received the specific error message that you reference. In addition to a TH update, Apple recently downloaded some kind of security update for High Sierra. I'm wondering if there might be some conflict there.....

I had a somewhat similar issue on Windows some years ago and it was caused by the windows indexing service messing with the content while the files were open. Disabling windows ability to index the content of the folder helped. I am not a mac user and have had no practical experience for decades. But I offer this is the spirit of suggesting looking for other mac activities like file and content indexing as a possible cause.

I would also suggest you try the things in the memory issues article here https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems Freezing is often just a symptom of memory or file access issues.

Matt - THANK YOU for the link! Setting network.http.spdy.enabled.http2 to FALSE did the trick! For others with this issue, here's the step-by-step:

Click the three horizontal bars to display the main menu in upper right hand corner Preferences>Config Editor (either scroll down or type "config editor" in the search bar) Click "I accept the risk" Type into the search bar: network.http.spdy.enabled.http2 Double-click the entry to toggle from true to false

Gmail is working again!

Matt - Thanks for the link and suggestions. I tried as many of the diagnosis issues / tests in the article as I could, but no luck. Psilospiral - I tried your step by step...also no luck.

Another weird thing: Gmail now is working intermittently. For about 40 minutes, I was able to send and download and now my TH Gmail is locked up again.

Meanwhile, my wife's TH Gmail is going from bad to worse. She now keeps getting a dialog box asking her to input her password, which it then rejects as incorrect. (It's not). And TH just spins and spins and spins. I tried all of Matt's and Psilospiral suggestions on her laptop, but no luck at fixing things.

I have no idea what is going on.
